Coach talking with a runner

Start with your goal

Are you trying to finish your first 10K, run a marathon PB, stay injury free, or get stronger alongside running? A coach who suits a beginner may not suit an experienced club runner, and vice versa. Be clear about what you want before you start looking.

What to look for

  • Relevant qualifications in coaching or strength and conditioning
  • Experience with athletes like you
  • A plan built for you, not a copy-paste template
  • Clear communication and regular check-ins
  • Willingness to work with physios when needed
  • Honest about what's realistic

8 questions to ask

1. What does a typical week look like with you? 2. How do you adjust the plan if I get injured or busy? 3. How often will we speak? 4. Do you include strength training? 5. Who have you coached with similar goals? 6. How do you measure progress? 7. What's the minimum commitment? 8. What does it cost, and what's included?

Red flags

  • Promises of guaranteed results
  • No questions about your history or injuries
  • The same plan for everyone
  • Pressure to sign up for a long contract before you've spoken properly

Frequently asked questions

Is online coaching as good as in-person?

For running, online coaching works very well. For strength work, in-person sessions help most when you're learning technique.
